紫芳草是一种很“短暂但惊艳”的观花小盆栽：每年适合观赏的时间只有几个月，却会在一丛油亮的绿叶上，连续开出带香气的蓝紫色小花，花心明亮发黄，清新又精致。它常被当作二年生来养——第一年主要长叶蓄力，第二年进入盛花期；不过市面上买到的带叶植株往往已经被培育到能在当年就开花，所以很适合想快速看到花的人。
